There are a couple ways to get to secluded home in northern Fiordland, located in the southwest corner of New Zealand鈥檚 South Island. Surrounded by mountains, hiking in takes three or four days. The next best option is flying in on a small helicopter, an experience that promises views of mountain peaks, glaciers, and ocean landscapes聽but is not for the faint of heart.
Filmmaker , who was intent on capturing what it鈥檚 like for Mitchell to live so remotely, opted for the second option. He hitched a ride with pilot Roger Monk, who has been delivering supplies to Mitchell鈥攁nd his family before him鈥攆or the past 35 years. 鈥淚 wanted to show how simple daily tasks can be such a crazy undertaking,鈥 Weiland says. 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 also traversing some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet.鈥澛
Weiland鈥檚 film, Still As It Was, presents an intimate picture of聽惭颈迟肠丑别濒濒鈥檚 life. When Mitchell grew up, his family鈥檚聽main source of income came from hunting. But they also picked up fishing for whitebait, an important industry in New Zealand, on the side. Today that鈥檚 become a way of life for Mitchell. 鈥淭he thrill of whitebaiting is never knowing what you鈥檙e gonna catch and living hand in hand with the surrounding conditions and the environment,鈥 he says.聽
While Weiland learned about 惭颈迟肠丑别濒濒鈥檚 story when he was studying abroad in New Zealand as a college student, he says his film research typically includes hours of googling in pursuit of unique, remote places that he should cover. 鈥淚t feels like we鈥檙e in a time and age where everything鈥檚 been done and every place has been explored and documented,鈥 he says. 鈥淏ut the more I do this, the more I realize that鈥檚 not the case at all.鈥
Still As It Was was produced by聽, the production company Weiland founded with聽.
