Your Apple Watch isn鈥檛 as rugged as it should聽be. It鈥檒l resist sweat, rain, hand washing, a post-workout shower, and,聽according to the company, a submersion of up to 3.3 feet for 30 minutes. But you can鈥檛 wear it in the pool while swimming laps. And though the metal case can take a beating,聽we鈥檝e found the raised edge of the聽display to be聽scratch-prone, especially if you like to play outside on bikes. To add a little extra protection, we tested four Watch聽cases:聽two that snap on聽and two that require you to swap out the stock Apple聽band. Below are the results.聽

Griffin Survivor Tactical Case ($30)

(Michael Frank)

What We Like:听罢丑别 doesn鈥檛 add much bulk聽and snaps right on for better scratch and drop protection. The protective screen (which doesn't require a new watch band)聽doesn鈥檛 interfere with the touch interface, although you need to tap a bit harder.聽

What We Don鈥檛:听罢丑别 look and feel is a bit too plasticy, and there鈥檚 no extra water protection. You can still access the watch鈥檚 digital crown under the case, but it鈥檚 harder聽to reach.

Best For:聽Adding damage (but not water) protection during outdoor activities like mountain biking and bouldering. Plus, it鈥檚 easy to put on and take off.聽

X-Doria Defense Edge ($30)聽

(Michael Frank)

What We Like:听罢丑别 is even sleeker than the Griffin,聽so much so that it鈥檚 barely noticeable on the Watch (it doesn't require a new band, either). The machined aluminum outer is burly聽and protected the聽body against serious knocks.聽

What We Don鈥檛:聽The X-Doria聽wraps around just the sides of the Watch, not the top, so your screen is still vulnerable. It was great for gym workouts聽but not heavy-duty enough for activities like聽bouldering, and it adds no water protection.

Best For:聽Leaving it聽on your Watch 24/7聽for stealth protection.聽

Lunatik Epik ($140)*

(Michael Frank)

What We Like:聽 offered the most scratch protection. The aluminum case wraps around the watch鈥攑rotecting the top, bottom, and sides鈥攁nd closes shut with two threaded rods, so it won鈥檛 fall off聽even if you take a real banger on your bike. An oversized knob fits over the digital crown, providing enough purchase even if you鈥檙e wearing gloves, yet聽it didn鈥檛 feel overly bulky.

What We Don鈥檛:听罢丑别 protective case聽isn鈥檛 waterproof and聽showed scratches early on, you have to use one of their two bands (neither of which is聽any better than聽what you get with the Apple Watch), and聽it鈥檚 also by far the most expensive option on this list.聽

Best For:聽People who are very hard on their gear.聽

Catalyst Apple Watch Case ($60)聽

(Michael Frank)

What We Like:聽Catalyst claims聽 is聽waterproof to 164 feet. While we didn鈥檛 test it that deep, the case聽kept out every drop in the聽pool. The chunky silicone strap is comfortable聽and will protect against most drops and knocks.聽

What We Don鈥檛:聽This case feels like a good prototype: very solid聽but with聽room for improvement. Catalyst doesn鈥檛 recommend it for use in hot tubs聽or during 鈥渉igh-velocity鈥 water activities,聽like jet聽skiing. It was also hard to get on the Watch, and once the case聽was on, the band, which you need to use, had a tendency to pop off when聽we took a hard hit.聽

Best For:聽Swimmers who want to use their Watch in the pool.
