THE SELL: Fewer zips makes for a spartan (and affordable) pullover. THE TEST: The design is minimalist but functional. The two-point hood is easy to adjust鈥攁nd rolls (and Velcros) out of the way when not in use. The entire jacket stuffs into its own pocket, which has a handy loop for attaching to your bag or pack. And Patagonia’s proprietary (and recyclable) H2No shell fabric kept us dry on everything from a spray-heavy outrigger-canoeing session to soggy all-day hikes. Just wear a lower layer with pockets鈥攖he Torrentshell has only one, on the inside of the chest. THE VERDICT: It’s not as breathable as a jacket with pit zips, but it’s half the price, extremely packable (just 10 ounces), and completely stormproof.
