Plaid has always been the de聽facto聽uniform for those of us who play outside. You spot it at campsites, on the river, and in mountain-town bars. All聽the major outdoor clothing brands sell the pattern in various iterations. There鈥檚 a good chance a few plaid shirts are hanging in your closet right now.

But did you ever wonder where plaid comes from and when it came into style? These were the questions Jeff Ladra thought about as he designed plaid shirts for his new apparel聽company. Over the past three years, Ladra has been researching these questions,聽and the result is where聽Ladra traces聽plaid all the way back to Northern Britain and Ireland聽around the fifth or sixth聽century BC. He聽then follows its path through the聽1800s and the rise of the lumberjack trade, up to the Beach Boys, punk rock, and finally into the present, where聽the selection is bigger than ever.

To celebrate聽plaid鈥檚 long history, here are seven of our favorite tops.聽

Topo Designs Work Shirt ($130)

(Jakob Schiller)

Denver-based Topo Designs uses聽thick, 100-percent cotton flannel for its聽Work Shirt, which is perfect for chilly summer evenings in the mountains. Kudos to Topo for the big, blocky prints and bold color choices.

Ibex Jackson ($145)

(Jakob Schiller)

The pearl snap buttons of the聽Jackson hint at Western roots, but with a straight seam across the back, the rest is totally city. The all-wool fabric鈥攑lenty thin for the warmer months鈥攈as a little stretch, making it perfect for bike聽commuting.

Patagonia Bandito ($90)

(Jakob Schiller)

Ventilation channels across this聽shirt鈥檚聽curved yoke, gussets under the armpits, and an anti-odor treatment make the Bandito the airiest,聽most technical shirt on聽our list. It鈥檚 ideally suited to long days on the trail. Bonus: It鈥檚 made from a recycled polyester fabric.

Pladra Elli ($120)

(Jakob Schiller)

All of Pladra鈥檚 plaids, including the Elli, feature animal graphics under the cuffs, behind the collar, and around the tag. This version of the聽Elli聽includes聽a聽bear, but other shirts have different animals.

Flylow Handlebar ($90)

(Jakob Schiller)

This shirt looks and feels like it鈥檚 made from cotton, but it鈥檚 actually 100聽percent synthetic, so it wicks moisture supremely well聽when you鈥檙e out having fun聽or chopping wood.鈥

Burton Brighton Flannel ($60)

(Jakob Schiller)

Turns out Burton makes great warm-weather kit, too. We鈥檙e fans of these flannels because of the old-school patterns and the name鈥檚聽reference to Utah鈥檚聽Brighton Ski Area.

Levi鈥檚 Vintage Clothing聽Shorthorn Shirt ($200)

(Jakob Schiller)

The Shorthorn is an old-school classic that鈥檚 long been a favorite with cowboys and rodeo hands. Levi鈥檚 knows you don鈥檛 want to break yours in while riding a bull, so this style聽comes with a preworn feel.
