Like the rest of you, I constantly daydream about buying a Sprinter van. Alas, it鈥檚 not in the budget, but that鈥檚 okay: There鈥檚 a less expensive way to turn a聽normal car into an adventuremobile. All you need are a few smart add-ons. We used $3,300 worth of gear to trick聽out my wife鈥檚 Honda Element for a recent trip.聽And while that鈥檚 not cheap, it鈥檚 a lot less than you鈥檇 spend on a Mercedes.聽

Yakima Roof Rack ($459)

(Yakima)

For starters, you鈥檒l want a聽roof聽rack聽system like the one we purchased from聽Yakima (,听$370;听,聽$89).聽It lets you聽haul camping gear on your roof, leaving more room inside聽for other essentials.聽I like Yakima because it offers a giant selection of accessories, and because it鈥檚 easy to tie things down to the round bars (as opposed to the angular bars from other companies).聽

Tepui Kukenam Sky Tent ($1,350)

(Tepui Tents)

The 聽is the most expensive item on our list, but it鈥檚 well worth the investment. It attaches to any聽roof rack, sits almost flat on your car when not in use,聽and sets up in minutes (just unfold the canvas, lower the ladder,聽and set the fly). It鈥檚 also ridiculously聽comfortable,聽thanks to a three-inch foam mattress that covers the entire footprint, and the聽thick canvas exterior makes the tent well聽suited for mild winter camping. Heads up: Check your rack鈥檚聽static load capacity (how much it will hold when the car is not in motion) to ensure it can hold both the tent and the people inside.聽聽

Yeti Tundra 50 ($380)

(Yeti)

I think of the 聽as a mobile refrigerator: It鈥檒l hold聽ice for up to five days聽if you鈥檙e careful. Yetis aren鈥檛聽cheap, but they鈥檒l buy you more time between grocery runs. We鈥檝e found that聽they鈥檙e the best options on the market.聽

Coleman FyreCaptain ($160)

(Coleman)

This full-sized聽two-burner stove聽lets you cook like you鈥檙e at home. You can saute, grill, and boil, which means real food on the menu聽instead of ramen and freeze-dried slop. Bonus: The comes with telescoping legs that come in handy聽if you don鈥檛 have a picnic table nearby.聽

REI Camp Roll Table ($65) and Helinox Sunset Chair ($150)

(REI and Helinox)

Dinner tastes better when eaten on a real table like the . What鈥檚 more, the聽aluminum slatted top won鈥檛 melt if you need to put down聽a hot聽pan.聽And sitting around the fire聽is easier when you have a nice chair聽like the , which fits in your glove compartment but feels like your聽comfy recliner back home.

EnerPlex Comandr Solar Panels ($300) and EnerPlex Generatr ($350)

(Enerplex)

If you鈥檙e on the road long enough, you鈥檒l need to power up your electronics at some point. You鈥檒l have limitless power for your laptop, camera, and phone with the , which charge the 100-watt , even if you鈥檙e 100 miles from the nearest outlet.聽

搁耻产产别谤尘补颈诲听叠颈苍蝉 ($12 to聽$19)

(Rubbermaid)

When you have a lot of gear,聽you need to keep it organized, and there鈥檚 nothing better, or cheaper, than . We bought one聽kitchen bin for all our cooking and cleaning gear聽and another for our聽nonperishable聽food.聽Take note: You need to keep these bins organized or they quickly become a chaotic聽disaster.

Reliance Aqua-Tainer聽($20)

(Reliance)

聽allows you to haul enough drinking and cleaning water聽for several days. Remember: Always get one with a spigot. Otherwise you鈥檒l waste water trying to pour from a big opening.聽
