Lindsey Vonn is taking a break from World Cup competition and heading back to the United States to fully recover from the intestinal ailment that sidelined her last month. 鈥淲ith the way the schedule has been and all the travel,鈥 said U.S. women鈥檚 head coach Eric Hoedlmoser, 鈥渟he just hasn’t had a chance to get back to strength. We want her back at full strength.鈥

The four-time winner and defending champ will miss the World Cup races in Are, Sweden, this upcoming weekend. Hoedlmoser says it鈥檚 “possible” that she鈥檒l also miss competing in Semmering, Austria, on December 28 and 29, which would push her return back to January.

Vonn crashed in both of her World Cup races鈥攄ownhill and giant slalom鈥攖his past weekend in France, dropping her even further behind Slovenian Tina Maze. The 29-year-old currently leads the World Cup standings with 799 points, 331 ahead of second place and 485 ahead of Vonn, who is in fourth. Maze, who finished second overall behind Vonn last season, .

“In sport it’s always going up and down,” Maze said. “Lindsey did a good job the last three years. For many races she was all the time at the top, so I knew that if I wanted to win the World Cup I needed to work as much as I can to be able to follow her.”聽
