On Wednesday, the UCI, professional cycling’s governing body, selected Richmond, Virginia to host the 2015 world road cycling championships, bringing the event to the United States for the first time since 1986. UCI officials in Copenhagen, Denmark, midway through the 2011 world championships. The event features two main races: an individual time trial and a road race, which are contested in professional, under-23, and junior categories for men and women. Richmond, once a regular stop on the cycling circuit when it hosted the Tour de Trump and Tour de DuPont in the 1980s and 1990s, was competing for the bid against Muscat, Oman, before the city earlier on Wednesday. The UCI also announced a new team time trial race with riders from Pro Tour teams. The road championships have not been held in North America since the 2003 championships in Hamilton, Ontario. The event’s only American appearance was in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1986. “It will certainly give me, and the entire new generation of American cycling something to aspire to,” said Taylor Phinney, 2010 under-23 world time trial champion.聽
