Slovenian Olympic skier Tina Maze, who won two gold medals at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, has announced plans to take a one-year break from ski racing, 聽on Thursday. The 32-year-old, who first entered international competition when she was 16, said she needed time off from the sport before deciding what to do next.
鈥淎fter 16 long and successful seasons, practicing all disciplines, I feel that my body and my mind need a longer rest than usual,鈥 Maze 聽on Thursday. 鈥淚 will allow myself a one-year break before taking any further decision.鈥
, Maze won the women鈥檚 downhill at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail and took gold in the women鈥檚 combined at the World Ski Championships in Beaver Creek, Colorado, firmly establishing her dominance across all events in women鈥檚 skiing. During the winter of 2012鈥2013, Maze achieved 24 podium finishes, taking the top spot of the聽FIS World Cup standings聽with 2,414 points, the highest total ever attained by any skier, male or female, in the competition鈥檚 history.
