Thanks to historic snowfall during the 2022鈥23 ski season, California鈥檚 Mammoth Mountain ski resort just extended the 2023鈥24 season by one week. The new closing day is August 6. The resort has stayed open into August just twice before: in 1995 and 2017.

As you may remember, Mammoth got slammed again and again by monster storms this winter. The resort surpassed its snowpack mark from the 2021鈥22 season in early January鈥攚ell before more storms slammed the area in February and March. By the season鈥檚 end, 700 inches (58 feet) of total snowfall at the Main Lodge and 900 inches (75 feet) at the summit.
Not surprisingly, this late in the season the snow is highly variable, so what鈥檚 open depends entirely on the conditions, and the snow situation can change through the day. Always before visiting to get the specifics on what鈥檚 open, and make sure the offerings are appropriate for your group鈥檚 skillset. For example, with the recent closing of the Discovery and Unbound lifts, there鈥檚 no longer any beginner terrain on tap.
That said, there鈥檚 still top-to-bottom skiing out the Main Lodge, with three lifts operating as of press time. Not bad for the dog days of summer. The skiing is from 7:30 A.M. to noon daily, but the , so there鈥檚 no reason why you can鈥檛 enjoy the best of both worlds.
No one can deny that it鈥檚 been an absolute banner season at Mammoth. And just think, we鈥檒l be looking for opening-day announcements in a mere two months.
