A Florida man spent five days, 14 minutes and 32 seconds underwater last week, emerging Friday with a new world record for a freshwater scuba dive. Allen Sherrod, 47, entered Groveland, Florida’s, at 8:46 a.m. last Sunday, September 11鈥攖en years to the minute after the first 9/11 terrorist attack鈥攁nd walked out Friday morning just after 9 A.M., breaking the old record by roughly 15 minutes. Sherrod drank Ensure and Gatorade for sustenance and killed time watching movies on an internet-equipped waterproof computer. Safety divers monitored him throughout the week. Back on dry land, Sherrod spent several hours breathing from an oxygen tank to help remove high levels of nitrogen that had accumulated in his body. The dive was Sherrod’s third attempt to break the record in the past year. The first two were aborted when the water became too cold and he became sick. “I feel good. I’m glad I did it,” he said.
