Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke to the planned Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline on the band鈥檚 on Thursday. 鈥淧resident Obama is soon to make a decision on whether to press one of THE big red climate self destruct buttons,鈥 Yorke wrote in reference to the planned 1,600-mile that would carry oil from Alberta, Canada, across at least six states and two provinces, to the U.S. Gulf Coast. The House of Representatives has until Nov. 1 to make a decision on the pipeline, but the Senate has not yet approved this legislation. Yorke went on to promote the upcoming 鈥溾 sit-in protest scheduled for August 20-Sept. 3 in Washington D.C. Yorke joins actor and Canadian musician in opposing the pipeline. The vast amount of oil beneath Alberta鈥檚 tar sands makes it an important source for the U.S., and a completed pipeline would carry more than 1 million barrels per day. over the ecological impacts of the pipeline itself, such as leaks and habitat destruction, as well as the increase in greenhouse gases that could result from easy access to so much oil. The U.S. State Department plans to release a statement about the impact this month. Keystone XL would be an addition to TransCanada鈥檚 existing Keystone pipeline, which has experienced this year.
