Jennifer Davis beats old mark by 26 hours

A 27-year-old woman on the Appalachian Trail on Sunday, covering 2,180 miles in 46 days 11 hours and 20 minutes. Jennifer Pharr Davis, from North Carolina, of 47 days 13 hours 31 minutes by more than a day. Davis, no Appalachian Trail novice, had set the women’s speed record of 57 days, 8 hours, 13 minutes in 2008. She began her 2011 trek June 15 on Maine’s Mount Katahdin and crested Georgia’s Springer Mountain to a cheering crowd on Sunday. Davis hiked most days from 5 A.M. until dark, ultimately averaging about three miles per hour and 47 miles per day. To arrive on schedule, she awoke at 2:45 A.M. on Saturday and Sunday, hiking 60.2 and 36.2 miles in her final two days on the trail and finishing at 3:26 P.M. Sunday afternoon. 鈥淚 just cried,” she told The New York Times. “It was such a relief.鈥
