Rescuers in a helicopter found a woman on Tuesday who in Oregon鈥檚 Columbia River Gorge after falling off a cliff and breaking her leg Saturday afternoon. Pamela Salant, 28, was hiking with her boyfriend near Hood River when the pair split up to look for a campsite. Salant fell into a ravine and broke her left leg in two places. Stranded without equipment or warm clothes, she survived for three days on berries, caterpillars, and creek water. As her boyfriend Aric Essig alerted rescuers on Sunday, Salant, unable to walk, scooted a mile and a half down the ravine toward the Columbia River. Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler said he wished Salant had stayed put, but that following a waterway was the next best thing. Essig that Salant attributes her survival skills to watching Touching the Void. 鈥淪he thought she was going to die,鈥 he said.
