The fabled giant catfish of the Mekong River will soon be driven to extinction if hydropower dams planned for the Mekong River go ahead, reports. The giant catfish is one of the largest freshwater fish on the planet.聽
Current scientific research shows that the Mekong catfish migrate from the Tonle Sap Lake up in Cambodia to spawn in Northern Thailand and Laos. However, the dam will present an unsurmountable barrier for the giant fish.聽
At half the length of a bus and weighing up to 600kgs, the Mekong River's giant freshwater catfish is already critically endangered.
