Usually,聽rugged watches are built to聽withstand聽extreme environments, like the bottom of the ocean or the top聽the world, not聽with聽a few bits of nature found there. But the , the聽latest timepiece from the celebrated Pennsylvania-based聽builder of adventure-ready watches, isn鈥檛 like most rugged watches.

Unveiled in late March,聽the $16,500 Himalaya Edition features an alligator-skin聽band, three slender hands, and鈥攃ontentiously鈥 a聽greenish-black聽dial made from rocks removed near the聽summit of Mount Everest.聽Local papers, including Nepal鈥檚 largest, the聽Kantipur Daily, have been quick to point out that regulations聽forbid the removal of natural objects from Mount Everest, a聽UNESCO World聽Heritage Site and part of . The Forestry Department has聽reportedly sent Kobold a cease-and-desist letter.

News of聽Kobold鈥檚 splashy debut party earlier this spring only fanned the flames. Held聽inside聽a walled compound in downtown聽Kathmandu, the fete was attended by Nepalese聽generals,聽members of the deposed royal family, ambassadors from three countries,聽and famed British explorer Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes. Of course,聽the resulting media coverage did聽little to dissuade potential buyers. The first聽batch of 10 Himalaya Editions sold out that night, and, as of this week, most聽of the second batch, an additional 15 watches, were also spoken for.

Company聽founder Michael聽Kobold, a mountaineer and聽lover of Nepal, stresses that his intentions are nothing if not noble.聽In 2010, while climbing Everest himself, his oxygen聽regulator聽malfunctioned, leaving him woozy and confused high on the mountain.聽His friends, longtime climbing Sherpas Ang Namgyal and Lhakpa Tundu, stepped in聽to help. They tried to fix his聽regulator, and when they couldn鈥檛, they doffed聽their own breathing equipment to give to him. 鈥淭hey saved my life,鈥 Kobold聽says.

In gratitude,聽he offered to train the duo in the family business, the comparatively safe聽profession of watchmaking. He put them up at his farm in Pennsylvania Amish聽country, showed them聽some of America (鈥淲e really liked Malibu,鈥 says Namgyal),聽and discovered that they were calm and detailed craftsmen. A year later, he聽secured them a workspace and a boutique shop front in聽Kathmandu. According to聽Kobold, the Himalaya Edition was meant to attract positive attention to a whole聽line of 鈥淢ade in Nepal鈥 wristwatches, eight styles that will be rolling out in聽coming聽months.

鈥淭aking rocks聽is not a big deal,鈥 Kobold says. 鈥淟iterally everyone does it and has done it聽since Everest was first climbed.鈥

Will the聽kerfuffle pass, or will the Forestry Department make an example of Kobold? Time聽will tell.聽Meanwhile,聽those intent on buying a bit of the big hill should also consider Krone鈥檚聽Sir聽Edmund聽Hillary Mount Everest commemorative fountain pen, with a bit of Everest聽summit rock embedded in the cap. The writing utensil, the only other聽鈥渃ollectible鈥澛爏ummit paraphernalia we鈥檝e run聽across,聽regularly appears on eBay for around $1,400鈥攁bout the same as聽what new ones sold for new in Beverly Hills in the late 鈥90s. 聽
