Cavendish Takes UCI Road Race Title

Mark Cavendish and Giorgia Bronzini won road race titles at the UCI World Championships this weekend in Copenhagen, Denmark. Italy’s Bronzini, the 2010 UCI road race winner, riders from the Dutch and German teams to outsprint Marianne Vos and defend her title. Cavendish from team Great Britain and outsprinted the men’s field, taking the title from 2010 champion Thor Hushovd, who failed to defend after a cost him and others approximately a minute. Both races were single-day events held on flat, fast, 140-kilometer courses. Cavendish’s win caps one of the best sprint season in men’s cycling history. In addition to his world title, he took five stage wins at this year’s Tour de France, bringing his career stage victories at the Tour to 20. He is the first British man in 46 years to win the road race title.
