A 12-year-old boy is awake and speaking this week after spending more than in the Pacific Ocean last Friday. Dale Ostrander was playing in the water in Long Beach, Washington when a rip tide pulled him out to sea. A nearby boogie boarder saw Ostrander but couldn’t reach him before he went under. On shore, nearly 20 kids from Ostranders church youth group for ten minutes before a surf rescue team arrived on scene. It took the team another 15 minutes to find Ostrander; by then he was unconscious and not breathing. Paramedics life-flighted him to Portland’s Oregon Health and Science University hospital, ten minutes away. Ostrander had regained a heart beat, but doctors there to find serious brain damage even if Ostrander survived. But on Sunday night Ostrander opened his eyes after hearing his name. By Monday he was breathing on his own and speaking short sentences. “He’s lucky to be here,” Ostrander’s father said. “And we’re fortunate for聽that.”
