Swiss cyclist Gino M盲der has died as a result of the injuries he sustained in a crash on stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse on Thursday, his Bahrain-Victorious team confirmed. The race, which crisscrosses Switzerland, is a warmup event for next month鈥檚 Tour de France.
M盲der crashed on the descent of the final climb to the line, along with Ineos Grenadiers rider Magnus Sheffield. Sheffield suffered a concussion as a result of the crash but was otherwise OK.
The 26-year-old M盲der was found unresponsive following the crash and was resuscitated by the race鈥檚 medical staff before being transported to the hospital by helicopter. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at 11:30 A.M. local time, his team said.

His talent, dedication, and enthusiasm were an inspiration to us all,鈥 Bahrain-Victorious managing director Milan Erzen said. 鈥淣ot only was he an extremely talented cyclist, but a great person off the bike. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse was canceled following the news of M盲der鈥檚 death, with the organizers and riders choosing to ride the final 16 miles, of what was supposed to be the stage, as a procession in honor of the deceased rider.
Along the route, fans clapped in support of the riders with some erecting signs honoring M盲der.聽As the bunch approached the line, the M盲der鈥檚 six Bahrain-Victorious teammates rode ahead of the others to come to the finish in a line together.
It鈥檚 not yet known what will happen with the remaining two stages of the Tour de Suisse, if the race will continue or if it is canceled.
