Magdalena Lewy-Boulet became the first American woman since 2003 to win the Falmouth Road Race, taking a clear victory on Sunday in an event that has been dominated by runners from Kenya and Ethiopia since the mid-1990s. Lewy-Boulet, 38, was born in Poland but represented the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics after becoming an American citizen in 2001. In her first-ever attempt at the Cape Cod race, she beat Burundi’s Diane Nurkuri-Johnson and four-time Falmouth winner Catherine Ndereba of Kenya by 18 seconds. Lucas Rotich won the men’s race in 31:37, four seconds up on fellow Kenyan Micah Kogo. Defending champions Gebre Gebremariam and Wude Ayalew were forced to withdraw at the last minute after before the world track and field championships begin next week in South Korea.
