Climbing 11,600 vertical feet in 25.3 miles, the is the freakishly intense half Ironman of skimo racing. The name comes from the fact that you鈥檒l ascend and descend all four peaks of Aspen Snowmass, and the event attracts the nation鈥檚 best athletes, including reigning skimo national champion and Aspen resident, Max Taam, who鈥檚 gunning for his fourth consecutive Power of Four victory this year.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a long race and there are always a few surprises,鈥 Taam says of the event that鈥檚 really an epic team adventure.
If you think you鈥檝e got six-plus hours of climbing and wild descents in you, the sixth edition kicks off February 27, and event manager Daragh Kneeshaw says there鈥檚 still room for intrepid skiers. So grab a buddy, and 鈥渃ome over prepared,鈥 he says. These tips from Taam and Kneeshaw will help you do just that.
Choose Your Partner Wisely
This is a pairs race, and rules stipulate teammates must be within 10 seconds of each other on the ascents, and within five seconds on the downhills. So it鈥檚 best if you鈥檙e closely matched. 鈥淎 lot of times some people are stronger on the uphills and weaker on the downhills,鈥 Taam says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 great both being able to ski downhill fast and aggressively.鈥
It also helps to pick a partner with complementary skills. 鈥淵our partner should bring something extra to the table,鈥 Taam says. 鈥淢aybe it鈥檚 a higher level of fitness, or someone who鈥檚 really knowledgeable about the equipment.鈥
Train Hard
Get in volume. 鈥淛ust like you鈥檇 train for a five to 10 hour race in any sport, you want volume鈥攁nd that can be on the bike, running, whatever your sport is,鈥 Taam says.
Do shorter races. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l learn a lot,鈥 Taam says. Aspen has a three nights throughout the winter with events that last about an hour. Or check out the US Ski Mountaineering Association鈥檚 for more events across the country.
Do a race day simulation. 鈥淵ou have to have training days similar in length to race day so you can learn to pace yourself,鈥 Taam says.聽One of the best ways to train for this event: split the course into two training days. 鈥淥ne day go from Snowmass to Buttermilk, then the next day do the second half of the race,鈥 Taam says. You鈥檒l enter backcountry areas on the course, so be aware of the hazards and research conditions before you head out.
Spend time with your race equipment. 鈥淵ou need to make sure your boots are comfortable for a long day, and the more time you spend on your skis, the more confident you鈥檒l be skiing them in the difficult terrain.鈥
Train in all conditions. 鈥淭raining uphill, you don鈥檛 want to just skin up the nice groomage鈥攕kin up icy moguls and boot pack up something steep,鈥 Taam says. 鈥淚f you seek out the difficult snow, you鈥檒l become a better skier.鈥 Plus, you鈥檒l be prepared for whatever conditions race day throws at you. 鈥淲e鈥檝e had fresh snow at a handful of races,鈥 Taam says. 鈥淐onditions can change a lot throughout the race.鈥
Gear Up
鈥淎 comfy boot is key,鈥 Taam says. 鈥淚f your boots aren鈥檛 comfortable you鈥檙e just going to be in pain the entire time.鈥 Taam likes .
Next up: lightweight skis. Taam races on . 鈥淭hey鈥檙e confidence inspiring; I can ski faster on them than any other racing ski I鈥檝e skied,鈥 he says.
Cover your body in lycra. 鈥淢ost serious racers wear the one-piece lycra, then we vary the thickness of the long underwear,鈥 Taam says. On a windy ridgeline, he鈥檒l toss on a wind vest. The Skimo Co. has a great race .
Taam recommends packing at least two sets of skins, preferably three. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 want to use one set until it fails, you want to alternate so they can dry out,鈥 he says. He also packs skins of different widths: narrower for better gliding on gradual climbs, fatter for more grip on steeper climbs.
Then you have mandatory gear: a beacon, shovel, probe, wind shell, and neck gator. 鈥淚鈥檇 also recommend a Camelbak, extra neck gator, and sunglasses or goggles,鈥 Kneeshaw says. Everyone gets a GPS unit at the race start.
Course Recon
Starting at 6 a.m., you鈥檒l ascend Snowmass then traverse into the backcountry and over to Buttermilk where a more technical ascent awaits. 鈥淭here are a lot of switchbacks in that section that can be a little iffy depending on snow conditions,鈥 Kneeshaw says. 鈥淭here鈥檚 usually a lot of snow. You鈥檙e not skinning up a groomed trail inbounds.鈥
From there, you鈥檒l ski down to a section of Buttermilk called Kayak and make your way to the base of Aspen Highlands, where you鈥檒l find your first aid station about a third of the way through. Expect Clif Bar products: bars, shots, blocks. And flat Coke.
Then you鈥檒l skin up Highlands, in bounds, up to Highland Bowl where you鈥檒l bootpack about 900 feet to the summit. You鈥檒l ski down the bowl and make your way over to Aspen Mountain, hitting aid station number two just before you hit the Congo Trail.
鈥淭he Congo Trail is something people always find difficult,鈥 Taam says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what connects Aspen Highlands to the backside of Aspen Mountain. It鈥檚 a narrow mountain bike single track, it鈥檚 two-thirds of the way in, so your legs are on fire at that point, and it鈥檚 hard to slow down on it.鈥
Then you have the final climb up the backside of Aspen Mountain. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard,鈥 Taam says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not very steep which almost makes it more difficult. You have to find a good rhythm.鈥 Taam says he often sees beginners struggle to maintain intensity on less steep climbs. 鈥淪o really focus on getting your speed up and focusing on that final climb.鈥
Aid station number-three is located at the summit, then it鈥檚 an inbounds race to the finish at Gondola Plaza in downtown Aspen, where friends, family, and admirers will cheer for you and the other 125 teams you鈥檝e been competing against. The was 5:13:21 (Taam and Gaston). The slowest: 11:44. The cutoff: 12 hours.
Fuel Right
鈥淚f you can鈥檛 get on course ahead of time, familiarize yourself with the ,鈥 Taam says, 鈥渁nd try to estimate how long it鈥檚 going to take you to get from point A to B to C to D so you can plan your fuel accordingly.鈥 His best tip for topping off during the race: 鈥淔uel on the flatter sections.鈥
Taam tries to eat something once an hour, like a cookie made with . 鈥淵ou can add your own ingredients to the mix鈥攏uts, berries鈥攕o you get a fresh, good-tasting energy product,鈥 he says.
