There are more insulated travel mugs in 2015 than ever before. And that鈥檚 a good thing. We love any tool that will keep our coffee hot or our whiskey cold during a day in the backcountry. But not all mugs are created equal. To find the best, I put six top聽models鈥攁ll sized between 16 and 20 ounces鈥攖o the test. Here鈥檚 how they stacked up.聽
The Test
First, I assessed聽drinkability:聽Is the lid easy to open? Can you open it聽with one hand?聽Then I tested the mugs for leaks:聽I filled each with water and聽dropped it聽into my sink from a height of two feet. For the heat test, I filled the聽mugs聽with 196-degree water, let them sit in my 70-degree kitchen for two hours,聽and then聽measured the water temperature in the mug. Afterwards, I dumped that water out, re-filled them with 196-degree water,聽let them sit for eight hours, and measured the temperature again.聽(Two and eight聽hours are聽the windows most brands reference聽when talking about their products鈥櫬爐hermoregulation abilities.) The results are ranked聽below, starting with the sixth-place finisher.
#6: GSI Glacier Stainless Commuter Mug聽17-Ounce聽($27)

Capacity:聽17 ounces
Usability:聽The lid on the聽 screws down into and rests under the lip of the cup. This makes it聽tricky to remove, but the lid itself is easy to clean. A tab slides back and forth to open and close the lid. While more low-tech than some of the other lids in this test, it was still easy to operate with one hand. Note: When open, the tab bumped testers鈥 noses while they drank, which, though not a聽deal breaker, was聽annoying.
Spillage:听窜别谤辞听
Keeps Liquids Hot for (Claimed):聽2 hours
Temperature Loss After 2聽hours:聽48 degrees聽
Temperature Loss After 8 hours:聽97 degrees聽
Bottom Line:聽This mug was our sixth-place pick because of low heat retention. But we liked the rubberized bottom, which helps聽keep the mug from sliding off car hoods or rocks when you鈥檙e camping.
#5:听础惫别虫听搁别肠丑补谤驳别听础耻迟辞蝉别补濒听20-翱耻苍肠别听($30)

Capacity:聽20 ounces
Usability:聽Before opening the聽 lid, you first have to press the safety. It sounds complicated, but it鈥檚聽easy to do with one hand and prevents any leakage. Like the GSI Glacier below, this mug has a聽texturized-rubber聽bottom.
Spillage:聽Zero. Thanks to this mug鈥檚聽well-designed lid, I would feel comfortable throwing this thing, full of coffee, into my camera bag.聽
Keeps Liquids Hot for (Claimed):聽8 hours
Temperature Loss After 2 Hours:聽50 degrees
Temperature Loss After 8 Hours:聽95 degrees聽
Bottom Line:聽The聽Avex聽retained the least amount of heat after two hours, but we鈥檙e willing to forgive that flaw because of the truly bomber lid. If you can鈥檛 afford spills, this is your mug.聽
#4: Yeti Rambler Tumbler聽20-Ounce聽($30)

Capacity: 20 ounces
Usability: The hearty聽 feels great in your hand,聽and the clear plastic lid is by far the easiest to clean of any we tested. That said, the聽lid isn鈥檛 as beefy as what you鈥檇 find on a normal coffee mug聽and doesn鈥檛 seal completely since Yeti designed the Tumbler for both hot and cold drinks.聽
Spillage: Considerable, but it鈥檚 not supposed to be leakproof since it doesn鈥檛 close all the way.聽
Keeps Liquids Hot for (Claimed): Yeti doesn鈥檛 specify
Temperature Loss After聽2聽Hours: 48 degrees
Temperature Loss After Eight Hours: 83 degrees聽
Bottom Line: I was blown away by how well it kept my coffee warm, even without a lid that seals fully. Credit the thick sides of this double-walled stainless-steel container. The Rambler Tumbler also feels the best in your hand鈥攕ubstantial and secure. I鈥檇 suggest it for people who want a device that pulls double duty: Drink your coffee from it in the morning and your beer at night.聽
#3: Hydro Flask聽Wide Mouth聽16-Ounce聽($25)

Capacity: 16 ounces
Usability: The lid has a聽 that snaps into a hole to seal shut. It was easy to open and聽close with one hand, and the lightly textured powder coating made the mug a pleasure to hold.聽
Spillage: Zero
Keeps Liquids Hot for (Claimed): 6听丑辞耻谤蝉
Temperature Loss After 2 Hours: 36 degrees
Temperature Loss聽After 8 Hours: 81听诲别驳谤别别蝉听
Bottom Line: This mug is a great聽all-arounder, even though it didn鈥檛 stand out in one particular category. It will keep your coffee just hot enough, we like the hand feel of the powder-coated exterior,聽and the lid was durable聽and easy to use.
#2:聽Kleen聽Kanteen聽Vacuum-Insulated Wide 16-Ounce聽($33 with a Cafe Cap and Stainless Loop Cap Combo)

Capacity: 16 ounces
Usability: We like that the drinking lid twists open and聽closed聽with a reassuring click. The twist is hard to do with one hand, however, so it鈥檚 not ideal if you鈥檙e driving. In terms of hand feel, we liked the聽, which was easy to grip.
Spillage: The Cafe Lid leaked a lot鈥攁bout half of a cup of water in 30 seconds. To be fair,聽Kleen聽Kanteen聽says the lid isn鈥檛 leakproof. , however, is.聽
Keeps Liquids Hot for (Claimed): 6 hours
Temperature Loss After 2 Hours: 29 degrees聽
Temperature Loss After 8 Hours: 69 degrees聽
Bottom Line: The聽Kleen聽Kanteen聽came in second behind the Stanley (below)聽for overall heat retention. This is your cup if you like your coffee hot聽but don鈥檛 want the beefy聽Stanley.
#1: Stanley Classic One-Hand Vacuum Mug 20-Ounce聽($30)

Capacity: 20 ounces
Usability: This has the easiest-to-use lid,聽thanks to its聽ergonomic, trigger-like opener. It鈥檚 big, and as such won鈥檛 fit in a car鈥檚 cup聽holders, but I found that this was my go-to for bringing to work.聽
Spillage: 窜别谤辞听
Keeps Liquids Hot for (Claimed): 8 hours
Temperature Loss After聽2 Hours: 24 degrees
Temperature Loss After 8 Hours: 60听诲别驳谤别别蝉
Bottom Line: The Stanley was the big winner in terms of short- and long-term heat retention.聽If you like your coffee hot, this is your mug.聽We also loved the trigger-style lid that never spilled but was easy to use, even one-handed.聽
