Next week, Ann Arbor鈥檚 five-day-long will commence for its sixth year running. The event encompasses everything you loved about summer camp鈥攆rom the campfires to the questionable talent shows to the crafts鈥攂ut with much more pork.

Ari Weinzweig, co-founder of , an Ann Arbor chain of unique food stores and restaurants, and author of , started the camp a few years ago to bring bacon lovers together. During research for his book, Weinzweig heard about a type of cuisine called 鈥渃amp bacon鈥 from the , a non-profit that documents southern food traditions as part of the University of Mississippi鈥檚 . It鈥檚 when you take a slab of bacon and roast it on a stick over an open fire. The concept鈥攁nd the name鈥攕tuck with Weinzweig.

鈥淭here鈥檚 just something about the idea of聽Camp聽Bacon聽that conjures up great images,鈥 Weinzweig wrote in a press release for this year鈥檚 festival. 鈥淏acon聽roasting over the bonfire鈥lue jeans and black hooded sweatshirts with shredded cuffs smelling sweetly of pork belly鈥aybe classes in聽bacon聽cooking and slicing,聽bacon-sack races,聽bacon聽making merit-badges.鈥澛

For the first few years the pork-a-palooza was held at various 窜颈苍驳别谤尘补苍鈥檚 establishments鈥攅ach includes a deli, a roadhouse, a creamery, and a bakery. But the event quickly swelled (Michiganders apparently love their pork) and Weinzweig needed to find a bigger venue. Luckily, the 窜颈苍驳别谤尘补苍鈥檚 family of business had recently added Cornman Farms, which raises聽goats, pigs, and produce, to its holdings. It proved to be an ideal venue.

Seeing participants roasting bacon over an open campfire last year was, 鈥渢he culmination of a dream for us,鈥 says 窜颈苍驳别谤尘补苍鈥檚 communications manager Eric Olsen. The dream continues this year with a pig-picking BBQ dinner, a Bacon Ball, and a workshop on baking with bacon鈥攁 crucial skill that should have been taught in the place of 鈥渇loss keychain weaving鈥 at your local summer camp.聽

The event has become fairly popular in the food community. This year, the lineup for the week includes public radio personalities 鈥,鈥 food filmmaker , and , the most famous cupcake baker in Memphis.聽

The event is a fundraiser; tickets to the lectures and workshops and cookouts benefit the Southern Foodways Alliance and the local 4-H program. Olsen says it feels good to support these organizations but that, 鈥渕ostly we do it because we really love bacon.鈥

Amen to that.
