Sometimes, the best thing you can do when someone takes a dig at you is embrace it. That鈥檚 what Knoxville, Tennessee, did in 1980聽after a wondered whether this 鈥渟cruffy city鈥 would be up for hosting that year鈥檚 World Fair.聽
Today, Knoxville鈥攚hich is hosting the from June 27 to 30鈥攑roudly calls itself the Scruffy City. That moniker makes the eastern Tennessee college town (the University of Tennessee calls Knoxville home) a friendly place for folks who are, well, a little scruffy around the edges. Folks like, uh,聽国产吃瓜黑料 readers.
If you鈥檝e been thinking about road-tripping to next weekend鈥檚 bike races, stop mulling聽and pack your bags. Thanks to Knoxville鈥檚 proximity to world-class hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and whitewater, showing up at a high-end coffee shop with salt crystals on your shorts and mountain bike mud striped up your backside is normal. Remember: it鈥檚 scruffy. And聽just because the city isn鈥檛聽polished to a high gloss doesn鈥檛 mean it doesn鈥檛聽have damn fine food.
Here聽are the spots you鈥檙e most likely to find me in next weekend. Now,聽turn on your out-of-office notification;聽pack your bike, hiking boots, and cowbell;聽and let me know what time you want to meet for dinner.
Friday Night: Watch Crits, Drink Beer, Eat Pizza, Repeat
The elite women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 crits聽circle downtown Knoxville鈥檚 Market Square, a block of shops and restaurants that聽Food & Wine recently referred to as 鈥.鈥 (Y鈥檃ll, we鈥檙e fancy now!) I recommend walking a block or two over for a drink at . Ignore the name鈥攊t鈥檚 mostly a joke. The owners realize drinking fussy-britches beer out of fancy-pants glassware (which they blow by hand) is a little extra, and they lean into it. Between races, drop into the聽, which serves hand-tossed pizzas and salads hearty enough to hold their own as a meal. I think I鈥檝e had just about everything on the menu here, and it鈥檚 all good. 聽聽聽
Saturday Morning: Fuel Up at Olibea
There鈥檚 no racing on Saturday, so you鈥檙e free to explore. That鈥檒l require a good breakfast. I love places like ,聽which stick聽to their roots but aren鈥檛 afraid to let new ideas blossom. The sunny caf茅 offers Southern breakfast classics聽like fried chicken on a pillow of a biscuit聽and eggs Benedict made with Tennessee ham. But because innovation is a good thing, Olibea聽also serves sorghum bowls topped with greens and a duck egg聽and breakfast tacos made with soy chorizo. I鈥檓 not really one to tell other people what to do, but聽order the house-smoked pork belly. Just do it.聽
Choose Your 国产吃瓜黑料
Knoxville鈥檚 1,000-acre is stuffed with close-to-town mountain biking and hiking trails. Just 30 minutes north of Knoxville, the offer even more hiking and mountain biking routes. Climbers and whitewater enthusiasts聽can head to the聽聽in Wartburg. (Yes, the same Wartburg that鈥檚 home to the Barkley Marathons.)
Right about now, someone somewhere is saying,聽鈥淲ait, Great Smoky Mountains National Park isn鈥檛 on your list?鈥澛營t is, of course.聽America鈥檚 most visited national park is gorgeous and has great hikes and vistas鈥攂ut it is extraordinarily busy. If you can, take a few days and get into the backcountry.
Refuel Your Belly and Your Faith in Humanity
Last year, Reader鈥檚 Digest and Good Morning America chose as the Nicest Place in America. Run by Yassin Terou, a Syrian refugee, this falafel house is welcoming to all, and if Yassin is there, he鈥檒l be your friend by the time you鈥檙e done placing your order. The gyros are always good, but聽in my book, the crispy, just-out-of-the-fryer falafel is where it鈥檚 at.聽
Get Wet
If you still need more adventure in your day, head to聽, where you can rent paddleboards and goof around in an old quarry聽or spend a couple more hours hiking on nature trails.
Grab Coffee and Browse
I will never not send you to support an independent coffee shop and bookstore. These two are neighbors, which makes things even easier. For the New York鈥揵ased reporters who are not sure if there is聽 worry not:聽 has you covered. The lattes are just about perfect, and the baked goods are good, too. Take your time in 鈥攖here are so many good finds on those shelves.聽
Get Dressed Up
Even scruffy folks enjoy a night on the town. Start at , a speakeasy-style spot in the聽Oliver Hotel. Many of the cocktails are named after characters from books, movies, and TV. As with any good speakeasy,聽your best bet is to tell your mixologist the flavors you love and let them pick the perfect cocktail. (Tip well, since they鈥檙e acting as your personal cocktail guide.)
For dinner, slide over to the hotel鈥檚 excellent restaurant. Much of the menu is locally sourced, and the diverse choices mean everyone will find something they like. is another spot where I can鈥檛 give you a firm recommendation for what to order. It鈥檚 all good, so just choose what sounds best.聽
Sunday: Get Ready to Race
Maybe you鈥檙e just watching other people race, but solidarity carbo-loading is real. My pick is the聽, where you can consume 4,000 calories鈥 worth of gossamer pancake stuffed with meat, cheese, smoked salmon, chocolate, fruit, and pretty much whatever else your imagination can dream up. The pancakes are light. The fillings are not. It鈥檚 the perfect combo.聽聽
