Photographer and outdoor enthusiast knows better than anyone how to handle a strong chill. Growing up in Montana, he says if you give up and go inside when the snow starts flying, you鈥檒l be locked away for most of the year 鈥 no one wants that!

Austin, who lives a hybrid of van and home life, highlights his experiences on TikTok. A particular series of posts he鈥檚 curated is called Campfire Cocktails, where he teaches his viewers how to whip up tasty drinks to make while camping.听

Campfire Cocktails began by collaborating with Bozeman Spirits Distilling to make a . His recipe calls for two ounces of cinnamon whiskey, two lemon quarters, two dashes of aromatic bitters, half ounce of honey syrup (three parts honey, one part water) and hot water.听

鈥淚 made this in the spring and can鈥檛 wait to make it again in the winter,鈥 Austin says. 鈥淧utting bitters in gives it a whole new flavor profile that really opens up the drink.鈥

Austin says whiskey is generally his drink of choice because it pairs well with so many hot drinks like coffee, cider or hot chocolate which he can make right on the campfire.

A clear expert on the subject, we asked Austin for all the tips and tricks so campers everywhere can easily whip up hot drinks to sip on while camping in cold weather.

Choose a Proper Heating Source

Austin鈥檚 heating source for whipping up hot drinks varies, but generally he prefers a Jetboil for boiling water fast. If he鈥檚 not using that, he will put a kettle over a campfire, either sitting on the side or on a .听

鈥淚 do love putting my kettle on a campfire because it鈥檚 great to always have readily accessible hot water,鈥 Austin says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so nice when you鈥檙e camping and go, 鈥極h I want to make a drink鈥 or 鈥業 want to refill my drink鈥 and you immediately have your campfire kettle ready.鈥

Prep a Good Cooking Campfire聽

Because he often uses a grate when boiling water for drinks, Austin keeps the fire small enough so that his kettle isn鈥檛 in direct flame.听

鈥淚 keep it a little lower to heat water,鈥 Austin says. 鈥淥nce it gets nice and hot, I鈥檒l pull the kettle out of the fire a little bit just to make sure it stays a nice warm temperature and not boil off all your water.鈥

Keep Kitchenware Simple and Durable

Early on in Campfire Cocktails, Austin made the mistake of using typical glassware and mixing equipment. He was frustrated with how breakable everything was and didn鈥檛 want to open up his van and find broken glass everywhere. So, over time, he curated a collection of outdoor friendly equipment.

First thing鈥檚 first: Austin got his trusty kettle from a thrift store. He recommends finding one that鈥檚 built for open flame, generally made of titanium or stainless steel.听

鈥淚鈥檝e definitely charred some bottoms of kettles before,鈥 Austin says, laughing.

He, of course, requires a few other tools for whipping up campfire drinks. Austin uses for shakers and mixing glasses. After years of using a 鈥榗rappy鈥 shaker that would leak and make a mess, he stumbled upon the brand and hasn鈥檛 used anything else since.听

鈥淎lmost everything they have is double-insulated,鈥 he says. 鈥淪o whether I鈥檓 making cold or hot drinks, it鈥檚 great to make things and drink out of. They basically built a lot of their stuff around doing exactly this 鈥 making drinks around the campfire.鈥

The copper highball shaker is designed with a built-in strainer, which he says is a big help. It also has a vacuum-sealed lid so he can make a drink and take it on the go, if he so pleases.听

Use Protection

One of the biggest mistakes Austin has made in the past is not using tongs or hot pads when pulling the kettle off of the fire.听

鈥淚 definitely have burned myself a few times,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 used to use makeshift stuff to handle the hot kettle.鈥

He strongly recommends a good pair of fire gloves.听

Another mistake he鈥檚 made is getting too complicated with his drinks.听

鈥淭he simpler the better,鈥 Austin says. 鈥淎 lot of the stuff I do on Campfire Cocktails is made in front of the camera, but if it was just for fun, I would probably make a lot of the ingredients ahead of time and bring it with me.鈥

For example, instead of packing fresh blueberries and maple syrup, prep ahead of time so you have a blueberry syrup ready for any toasty beverage you鈥檇 like.听

Never Forget the Coffee聽

鈥淚鈥檓 a coffee snob for sure,鈥 Austin says. 鈥淚 prioritize my life around coffee and where I鈥檓 going to get my next cup 鈥 it鈥檚 an addiction.鈥

Unlike the typical coffee snob, however, Austin isn鈥檛 afraid of instant coffee when camping.听

鈥淚t sounds like a cardinal sin, but I鈥檝e found a brand called Black Coffee Roasting Company in Missoula Montana and they make an amazing instant that tastes just as good as the normal stuff,鈥 he says. 鈥淚f I鈥檓 running out to see a sunrise, it鈥檚 four o鈥檆lock in the morning and I don鈥檛 want to sit and make pour over, so I throw instant coffee into some hot water from my Jetboil.鈥

When he does have the time to make pour over, Austin uses the . He compares it to a Russian nesting doll pour over kit that fits into a compact setup, something he doesn鈥檛 take for granted when camping.

鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 take up a ton of room and mimics the kind of pouring control of a gooseneck kettle,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 even bring it into hotels when I鈥檓 on the road because most of them use K-cup machines which are terrible for the environment and, in my opinion, have awful coffee.鈥
