Canned Drinks Are the Newest Products for the CBD Crowd

Nowadays, it seems you can stock your whole pantry with CBD goods鈥攖here are cannabidiol edibles, tinctures, coffee, and cocktails. But one of the most rapidly expanding categories of CBD-infused products is canned beverages, with a market that鈥檚 forecast to grow from $2 million in sales in 2018 to more than $11 million by 2025.

Many of these beverages contain natural fruit flavors and 20 to 25 milligrams of CBD, one of the primary active ingredients in cannabis. CBD has been hailed for its anti-inflammatory and benefits, and many CBD beverage brands say the body absorbs CBD faster and more efficiently when it鈥檚 in liquid form. But Tory R. Spindle, a postdoctoral research fellow at Johns Hopkins, says further studies are needed to back up these claims, noting there has been little controlled research into CBD鈥檚 effects on humans. He adds that cannabinoids鈥攖he chemicals found in cannabis鈥攁re usually insoluble in water, and he鈥檚 skeptical that the amount of CBD in a canned beverage is enough to derive any positive effects. (In a recent study he helped conduct, Spindle says subjects didn鈥檛 see a difference between a placebo and a 100-milligram dose of CBD.) This past fall, the National Institutes of Health that it will launch a study on CBD鈥檚 pain management properties.

In other words, the jury is still out on the science behind the benefits of CBD. But if you decide to give it a try, here are six new canned drinks to check out.

鈥檚 CBD sparkling water is available in four varieties: blackberry, blood orange, raspberry, and lemon. The naturally flavored drinks contain 25 milligrams of CBD and are unsweetened, with just a hint of sour.

Vybes CBD Beverage (12 bottles for $96)

One of the more unconventional-tasting brands of the bunch, 鈥檚 uncarbonated CBD drink comes in five fruit, spice, and herb flavors: Honeycrisp apple basil, burning mandarin, strawberry lavender, peach ginger, and blueberry mint. We liked the slightly sweet notes鈥攅ach was similar to drinking water that had been muddled with fresh fruit and spices. They鈥檙e organic and contain 25 milligrams of CBD each.

Weller CBD Sparkling Water (12 cans for $60)

We dug all three flavors of 鈥檚 fizzy CBD beverages. They had a Jolly Rancher鈥搇ike taste that provoked instant nostalgia. The black cherry, watermelon, or tangerine drinks are sweeter than some of the others on this list, but they鈥檙e made with natural flavors and ingredients. Each contains 25 milligrams of CBD.

Day One Sparkling CBD Water (6 cans for $39.50)

Every can of has 20 milligrams of CBD. For now, it鈥檚 available in just one flavor, lemon鈥攇rapefruit and lime are on the way鈥攚hich was crisp and fresh with a bit of bracing tartness.

Cirrus Sparkling CBD Water (4 cans for $20)

Founded by the owners of Second Self Beer Co., drinks contain 10 milligrams of CBD and come in five flavors, including Kata (ginger and turmeric) and Waikiki (papaya and lychee). While the beverages are pretty hemp forward, the interesting herbal notes help balance out their fruitiness.

Cann Social Tonic (6 cans for $27)

鈥檚 Social Tonic is the only CBD drink we tested that also includes THC. Each can contain 2 milligrams of THC and 4 milligrams of CBD. The three flavors鈥攍emon lavender, blood orange cardamom, and grapefruit rosemary鈥攈ave just a touch of sweetness from the addition of agave, which is counteracted by an appealing skunky undercurrent on the palate. Note: This is considered a microdose of THC, so you may feel a slight buzz after drinking a can.

4 Healthy(ish) Holiday Cocktail Recipes

The holidays are a time for family, merriment, fun鈥攁nd perhaps a little more drinking than usual. While there鈥檚 no such thing as a completely healthy cocktail, there are ways to make even the most caloric听holiday beverages (eggnog, we鈥檙e looking at you) less rich. 鈥淐ocktails can just be a tad healthier if you鈥檙e conscious of the sweeteners and modifiers,鈥 says听, author of the new holiday-beverages听book ($14, Dovetail). We asked four听bartenders across the country for healthy(ish) cocktail recipes to make at home this season.

Cocktail recipe
(Scott Gordon Bleicher)

Eggless Avocado Nog

This large-formatcocktail, created by Los Angeles bartender Jason Eisner, is featured in Goldfarb鈥檚 new book. 鈥淥ne reason I love holiday cocktails so much is because they can be a bit indulgent,鈥 Goldfarb says. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 drink these heavy, creamy, super-desserty cocktails any other time of the year.鈥 This vegan version of classic eggnog is a healthier alternative, using avocado and coconut milk to provide texture instead of heavy cream and eggs.

Ingredients

  • 2/3听cup almonds
  • 11/2cups granulated sugar
  • 5 cups unsweetened whole coconut milk
  • 1 cup vanilla hazelnut milk
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 lemon rind, pith removed
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4听teaspoon baking soda
  • Flesh of half an听avocado
  • 6 ounces blanco tequila
  • 2 ounces mescal

Directions

In a food processor, combine almonds and two tablespoons of听sugar. Pulse on medium until ground into a fine paste. In a saucepan, combine coconut milk, hazelnut milk, cinnamon sticks, lemon rind, vanilla, and baking soda, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15听to 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, discard cinnamon sticks and lemon rind, and let cool. Mash avocado and whisk into coconut-milk mixture, then add ground almond paste and remaining sugar. Return pan to stove, and cook over low heat, stirring and scraping the bottom for five听to seven听minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool completely. Pour into a pitcher and stir in tequila and mescal. Serve in highball glasses. Makes ten听cocktails.听

We Got the Beet

Las Vegas is known for excess, but at farm-to-table restaurant听,听the focus is on ingredients and composition. Such is the case with this light holiday cocktail, created by Victoria Levin, a听beverage-industry veteran and director of project management at听, which operates Honey Salt.听The antioxidant-rich beet juice provides a dose of vitamins A and C, while the ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can help control blood sugar. 鈥淭his drink has a gorgeous color for the holidays, and it鈥檚 festive听with the sprig of rosemary,鈥 Levin says. 鈥淚t packs a punch of nutrients and tastes like an earthy, whimsical dream.鈥 The recipe for cardamom honey yields three and a half quarts and is good for听up to one month.听听

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces听Hendrick鈥檚 Gin
  • 1 1/2 ounces听fresh beet juice
  • 1/2听ounce听fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ounce听infused cardamom honey (directions below)
  • 2 ounces听Fever Tree Ginger Beer

Directions

To make cardamom honey: In a saucepan over听medium-high heat, lightly crack 30 cardamom pods open with a muddler. Toast for two minutes to release aromatics. Add two quarts ofwater, and bring to a simmer. Then pour two tablespoons of听ground cinnamon into water and whisk while adding two quarts听honey. Turn heat off, and let steep for 30 minutes. When cool, strain with a fine-mesh strainer to remove solids. Transfer to an appropriate-size container, and cover tightly.

For cocktail: Pour all ingredients鈥攅xcept ginger beer鈥攊nto a shaker, add ice, and shake vigorously. Add ginger beer to shaker, then strain over fresh ice into a rocks or听collins glass. Swirl a sprig of fresh rosemary around the edge听of the glass, and garnish. Makes one drink.听

Gramercy Riffs

This low-ABV version of a holiday punch is a听lighter听option to serve at parties, according to Alex Jump, bar manager of Denver cocktail bar听. 鈥淚t uses a little wine and aperitif听to bring the proof down, allowing your guests to have a few without feeling the effect of a full-proof cocktail,鈥 she says. 鈥淟et鈥檚 face it, none of us really like having all of our friends getting trashed at our house.鈥澨

  • 6 ounces听Spring44 vodka
  • 3 ounces听Svol Aquavit听or a similar, dill-flavored aquavit
  • 3 ounces听Cocchi Americano
  • 3 ounces听Leopold New York Sour Apple Liqueur
  • 3 ounces听Riesling
  • 3 ounces听cane-sugar syrup
  • 3 ounces听lemon juice
  • 6 ounces听sparkling wine

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin, and shake well with ice. Strain into wine glasses and top with more sparkling wine. Garnish with听lemon wheels. Makes six drinks.

Vegan Buttered Rum

Hot buttered rum is a classic holiday cocktail. But this version, created by Ky Belk, bar director for Denver鈥檚听, is a vegan iteration听that replaces the butter with cashew milk and uses chai tea as a base. 鈥淯sing the cashew milk to create a hot 鈥榖uttered鈥 chai delivers a healthier version that鈥檚 plant-based and dairy-free,鈥 says Belk, adding that the combination of flavors is also more complex than the mix of butter, ice cream, and sugar in the classic drink. Another perk: 鈥淭he chai tea听and MCT oil provide听an energy boost, unlike the nap-inducing classic hot buttered rum,鈥 he says.

Ingredients

  • 5 ounces听strong, spicy chai tea, heated
  • 1 1/2 ounces aged rum
  • 2 ounces cashew milk, heated
  • 1 tablespoon coconut or MCT oil
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a blender until oil is fully incorporated. Pour into a glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick. Makes one drink.听
