鈥淢y partner and I are lucky because we were able to find this house that nobody else wanted to live in. It has seven-foot ceilings, it鈥檚 900 square feet, and it鈥檚 right next to a busy road. It鈥檚 still tight making the mortgage; we have a roommate. We鈥檙e able to make it work, but I do have a second job. [The store鈥檚] starting salary has definitely become a barrier to attaining good employees. It鈥檚 frustrating because I interview these fantastic candidates, and then I tell them the salary and I can see on their faces that they鈥檙e not interested. I say, 鈥榃e鈥檙e working to change it,鈥 but that doesn鈥檛 mean that it鈥檚 changed right now. It鈥檚 hard to know that our starting salary is lower than what people can make at the bagel shop down the street.鈥 鈥as told to Shawnt茅 Salabert

鈥淚 recently saw a job [posting] and they wanted to pay $25 an hour. We鈥檙e worth more than that. When you鈥檙e the second connection to the consumer (or to the buyer, if it鈥檚 B2B) after imagery, you鈥檙e the first person talking to the customer, and you鈥檙e the one bringing them in. That鈥檚 super important. If you鈥檙e generating income for a brand, be it in the immediate term or over time, that鈥檚 a valuable commodity. I don鈥檛 screw my clients over. I do everything on a project basis because I think that鈥檚 way more fair for the client; they shouldn鈥檛 be paying for writer鈥檚 block or when I get distracted by Twitter. But it鈥檚 also fair for me; if I knock it out of the park on the first draft, I shouldn鈥檛 be penalized for that.鈥 鈥掷厂

鈥淲e sell tools to create an experience, and that experience is in your heart and mind forever. It stays with you, it inherently makes you better鈥攆or yourself and for other people. That鈥檚 why I鈥檝e stayed all these years, because it鈥檚 truly a great industry where you feel good about coming to work every day. I鈥檓 comfortable that I don鈥檛 have the biggest lines (such as Gear Aid, Opinel, and Minus 33), that I don鈥檛 have the biggest income coming in鈥擨鈥檓 comfortable with life as it is. I鈥檓 not looking for a lot more. I鈥檝e always said that if I made lots of money, I鈥檇 just give it away, because money is power鈥攁nd it鈥檚 not power to control, but it鈥檚 power to make positive change.鈥 鈥掷厂

鈥淢y background is in social justice and advocacy work around education and immigration. I鈥檓 making the same amount now that I was at my previous job, and decided to accept that because I was interested in beginning in this [outdoor] field. But it鈥檚 just my husband and myself鈥擨 don鈥檛 have any kids to worry about. It may have been more of a dealbreaker for me if I was in a different situation. I would like to see folks get paid more鈥攅specially those of us who are bilingual or multilingual, and people who are being asked to do racial equity work, because there鈥檚 a lot of emotional labor that鈥檚 involved. It鈥檚 something that I care about and work that I signed up to do, but it does take a toll in a different way that is less visible.鈥 鈥掷厂
