On a road trip through southern Patagonia, I got a flat tire on the famously rough Ruta 40, the north-south highway that spans Argentina for more than 2,700 miles. My only chance to repair the tire was a little town called Gobernador Gregores, where I hoped to find an auto shop.

No one was around on that Sunday evening. But eventually I found a young boy who told me that the entire town was at the doma鈥攁n event similar to an American rodeo, where gauchos showcase their horsemanship and animals.

I immediately gave up on my tire and went to the party. All the gauchos gleamed in their best outfits, traditional Argentine music played loudly, and half of the guests were already drunk. Suddenly, everyone began cheering as the horse breaking began. I arrived just in time to pull out my camera and grab this shot.聽
