Carissa Moore grew up in Honolulu, which聽the 27-year-old pro surfer still calls home when she鈥檚 not traveling the globe for competitions. Moore earned her fourth World Surf League Women鈥檚 World Tour champion title in 2019. In mid-March, when the WSL canceled all of the remaining聽events聽on the tour that month聽due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Moore was in Australia, having just won the 2020 Sydney Surf Pro. She flew home to Hawaii聽and has been sheltering there ever since. We called her up to ask about her favorite beach towns around the world, the places she鈥檚 most looking forward to visiting聽again when she鈥檚 able.

Why Visit: 鈥淚 love the overall vibe of the area. It鈥檚 very chill and laid-back,鈥 Moore says.

When to Go: Conditions are best between December and April. 鈥淒uring that time, the weather is usually warm and sunny, and the water is clear and inviting,鈥 she聽says.

Need to Know: 鈥淵ou should be an intermediate-to-advanced-level surfer聽to paddle out here,鈥 says Moore. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a beach break, so the sand is constantly shifting and changing the way the wave breaks. You can drive down to the bottom of the hill and park a two-minute walk from the beach, or park at the top and walk down the hill. Make sure to watch out for snakes and giant lizards.鈥

Don鈥檛 Miss: Moore鈥檚 favorite place to eat after a morning session: . 鈥淭hey make amazing, fresh muffins and a divine avocado toast,鈥 she says.

Hossegor, France

Why Visit: 鈥淲hite-sand beaches stretch for miles, and you can find fun peaks to surf anywhere,鈥 says Moore.

When to Go: Late September and early October typically see聽prime surf conditions here. 鈥淭he weather can vary, but you can score some beautiful, hot, long聽sunny days at the beach. The water is cool, crisp, and refreshing,鈥 says Moore.

Need to Know: 鈥淭ide changes are huge in Europe, so the surf breaks are constantly moving,鈥 she says. 鈥淭hese breaks can vary from beginner to advanced, depending on where you paddle out, how shallow the sandbank is, and how strong the current is.鈥

Don鈥檛 Miss: 鈥淎fter a morning surf, I鈥檓 all about the French pastries at聽 in town,鈥 says Moore. 鈥淭hey have the pastries out in a beautiful display鈥攊t鈥檚 hard not to buy one of everything.鈥 She also likes聽 for a quick, healthy buffet lunch and聽 for the best mussels and fries for dinner. 鈥淭hey bring out the mussels and fries in big buckets, and you just eat with your hands, which makes it taste even better,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 look forward to eating there all year.鈥

Sunset Beach, Oahu

Why Visit: Moore likes this North Shore beach for the power behind the waves and the fun of figuring out the lineup.

When to Go: You鈥檒l find big, powerful, challenging waves during the winter months here鈥攆rom October to April鈥攐r calm, flat water that鈥檚 great for swimming in the summer.

Need to Know: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a far paddle out to the lineup, and it鈥檚 a big playing field once you get out there,鈥 Moore says. 鈥淪unset Beach is recommended for the advanced rider.鈥

Don鈥檛 Miss: Head to a nearby聽coffee and juice hut called the聽. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l get yummy smoothies and a great Instagram capture,鈥 says Moore. For a heartier聽meal, she聽recommends driving 30 minutes south to Haleiwa for a healthy breakfast at the聽. 鈥淭he pancakes are at the top of my list,鈥 she says.

Margaret River, Western Australia

Why Visit: Even if you鈥檙e not a surfer, you鈥檒l find plenty to do in Margaret River. 鈥淭his is one of the most beautiful places in the world,鈥 Moore says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the perfect place to reconnect with yourself and nature. The people are lovely, and there are some amazing places to wine and dine.鈥

When to Go: The best conditions here run聽from December to April.

Need to Know: 鈥淭he waves are wild and聽woolly, and most spots I recommend for intermediate-to-advanced-level surfers,鈥 Moore says. 鈥淭here are many great trails along the beach, too. I love taking a walk at sunset with my husband to unwind.鈥

Don鈥檛 Miss: Moore likes to enjoy聽a local wine tour and stop聽for a bite to eat at聽, a founding winery in the area鈥檚 thriving scene. To warm up after some聽morning sets, head to聽 for a muffin and a chai latte.

Waikiki Beach, Honolulu

Why Visit: This is the beach where Moore鈥檚 dad first taught her to surf when she was five years old. 鈥淭his is also the birthplace of surfing,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 love paddling out and looking back at all the beautiful hotels and admiring our iconic Diamond Head.鈥

When to Go: This spot is firing any time of the year, but it can get busy. Moore advises heading out at daybreak to avoid the crowds and to 鈥渇eel the first rays of warmth from the sun as it creeps past the height of the hotels.鈥

Need to Know: 鈥淭his surf spot is recommended for everyone, from beginners to advanced鈥攁nyone looking for some fun and sharing the surfing stoke,鈥 Moore says. 鈥淚t can get very crowded with people who don鈥檛 know what they鈥檙e doing, though, so be careful, and stay aware of your surroundings.鈥 Moore says she usually parks at the Honolulu Zoo and walks ten聽minutes from there to the bronze statue of Duke Kahanamoku, where most surfers paddle out.

Don鈥檛 Miss: Get a refreshing聽 post surf. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e vegan, banana-based soft-serve goodness with healthy toppings,鈥 says Moore, who has a bowl named after her at the Honolulu branch. 鈥淭he macadamia nut honey is to die for.鈥
