With all the gear he needs听to shoot听his subjects鈥攅lite mountain bikers, climbers, whitewater kayakers, and big-wave surfers鈥攑hotographer Michael Clark can鈥檛 exactly pack light when he鈥檚 traveling to some of the earth鈥檚 most far-flung locales. While his kit varies by assignment, there are some essentials he always brings to make his life easier, whether he鈥檚 working in Patagonia鈥檚 mountains or New York鈥檚 urban jungle.

鈥溙齠its a camera and lenses, but I often take out the padded dividers to use it as a regular shoulder or laptop bag. Plus, it鈥檚 a decent size, so it could be all you need for a carry-on.鈥

鈥淭hey鈥檙e kind of pricey, but if you鈥檙e flying a lot, 听really cut down on hearing loss, so you don鈥檛 show up at your destination half-deaf.鈥

鈥淭here are like a billion little charging sticks out there. 听might not be the smallest, but I use it because it works for my smartphone and my cameras. It鈥檒l do about two and a half full charges of my phone, and at least one charge of听some mirrorless cameras.鈥

鈥淚f you need a camera-specific bag, the has been one of my go-tos for years. Bigger and heavier-duty than some other brands, it鈥檚 great for larger cameras like DSLRs. It鈥檚 also way more protective and has a built-in rain shell.鈥

鈥溙齢elps me figure out where the sun is going to be at any time of day, wherever I am. It uses GPS and knows which way I鈥檓 pointing the phone, to show me the exact path of the sun, which is pretty cool.鈥


Eagle Creek Pack-It Original Garment Folder听($29)

鈥淚 don鈥檛 have many nice shirts, but 听comes in handy when I have to dress up to give talks in front of a bunch of people. It has four flaps and an internal piece of plastic to keep it rigid, which makes it easy to fold and stack shirts.鈥

鈥 and pack down tiny when they鈥檙e empty. I鈥檝e also found them to be super durable, and they don鈥檛 leech plastic flavor into the water, so it always tastes great.鈥
