A light hiker is the best type of shoe听for听on-foot听adventures close to home. The right pair can bridge the gap between trail and town, saving听you both money and closet space.听Unlike a high-top听hiking boot, it offers less structure, more breathability, and a minimal听weight. That makes听it听much more comfortable for occasions when听you aren鈥檛 carrying a heavy load or walking for days at a time鈥攊.e., 95 percent of the average user鈥檚 hikes.
An increasing number of manufacturers have caught on to this need听and, in the past five years,听have focused on more functional and听better-looking designs. Now there are a wealth of options on the market. Since many听of us are staring down months of nearby adventures (though听these shoes will also听serve you farther afield听once things reopen), it seemed听apropos to put five of these do-it-all light hikers in a head-to-head test.
The Test
Comfort: I wore each pair while working at my standing desk for an entire day听and during听an hourlong hike听in a green space near my house.
Performance: Besides the hike, I听wore听each听to climb and descend听a steep scree field three times. I gauged how well each shoe听gripped the ground and interacted with my feet.
Style: I FaceTimed with fashion journalist and founder of the outerwear site , Alex Rakestraw. We studied each pair听and discussed their designs.
The Winner

Danner Trail 2650听($160)
Comfort: 5
Performance: 4.5
Style: 5
was听so comfortable and capable during both the hike and scree-slide tests that I wore them on听a bonus hike听with my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter in our Deuter Kid Carrier听that same day. The听shoes听handled my adorable 25-pound load with aplomb, and the hours on my feet proved to be听full-on enjoyable. Credit the cushy midsole, coupled with an OrthoLite insole, the latter of which hugged the bottom听of my feet like an old friend; this helped while standing at my desk as well as听when sliding听downhill on scree, because my dogs听didn鈥檛 move听around in the shoe at all. On the fashion front, Rakestraw shared听my love of the 2650. 鈥淭hese are my favorite true-to-form light hikers that are out right now,鈥 he says. 鈥淎 lot of the time,听brands keep designs so firmly anchored in the idea that it鈥檚听a boot,听to the detraction of the sneaker.听These听hit a balance with this that no other pure outdoors light hikers have hit so far.鈥
Best Value

Salomon Outline听($110)
Comfort: 3.5
Performance: 4.5
Style: 4
If you鈥檙e on a budget, look no further than the , which was fantastic by听all three testing criteria听and costs $50 less than the 2650. Its听aggressive five-millimeter lugs allowed me to arrest a downward slide in less than two feet on the scree field. Meanwhile, its听extremely lightweight and breathable upper felt听like that of听a comfy sneaker, making this听a best-of-both-worlds day hiker. Rakestraw believes that this party-on-top, business-on-bottom approach added to the aesthetic of the shoe as well. 鈥淚 love that it has a running-shoe upper with a monster-truck bottom. It looks a little sandwiched together, but because it is Salomon, there is a real tastefulness to how it was executed,鈥听he听says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like one of those Porsche 911 models with big Baja tires: you might say, 鈥榃ait, that doesn鈥檛 go together,鈥 but it鈥檚 very utilitarian because of it.鈥
Best Performance

Oboz Arete Low听($125)
Comfort: 5
Performance: 5
Style: 3.5
If this test had been based solely on performance, the would have won. I made audible oohs and aahs听while navigating听downhill amid both mud and scree, as the Arete鈥檚 fantastic traction and best-in-test fit made it听incredibly capable at maintaining control. The听fit鈥攁 nice cupping heel to keep my foot in place, with an arched midfoot听and a wide toe听box鈥攎arried the best of performance and comfort. Though the upper was featherlight and breathed well, I never felt like this听shoe听would be undergunned听on a technical day hike. Oboz has not historically been known as a stylish听brand, but it stepped up its听game with the Arete. 鈥淚 think this is a great move for the brand,鈥 Rakestraw says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 somewhere between a walking shoe and a really technical sneaker, and it looks completely unlike anything I would associate with Oboz. It has some of that outdoor niche detailing that鈥檚 in fashion right now.鈥
Best Summer Style

Columbia Vitesse Outdry Hiking Shoe听($110)
Comfort: 4.5
Performance: 3.5
Style: 4
I don鈥檛 think of Columbia as a听brand that puts aesthetics first, but the听听proved me wrong. 鈥淚 think these would be really fresh with shorts,鈥 Rakestraw says. 鈥淚 like how big the weave is on top. This is a funky risk-taking shoe that is aggressively summer听and retro in color scheme.鈥 On the performance side, these听were听the most running-shoe-like of the bunch, and I felt extremely comfortable standing in them for hours at my computer. They also听had lugs that were tough听enough to help me maintain control while descending the scree field. My only beef was that my feet got extremely hot because of听the waterproof upper. I finished my 55-degree, hourlong hike with wet socks and clammy feet.
Best for Mountain Townies

Forsake Cascade听($110)
Comfort: 3.5
Performance: 1.5
Style: 3.5
I really liked the way the 听looked with jeans, but I wasn鈥檛 happy with the shoe鈥檚 performance. It was听plenty comfortable for听walking on streets and standing at my desk for hours, but the fit felt sloppy during hiking climbs and descents. On听one downhill, both of my big toes听hit the front of the shoe for 30 consecutive steps. That鈥檚 a one-way ticket to losing a toenail on any longer hiking trip. Their lugs were the least aggressive听of the test听and did little to help me control myself on scree. But when I brought these issues up with Rakestraw, he reminded me that they have听a place in this market. 鈥淭hey do look like a nice casual sneaker鈥攍ike a generic seventies-inspired runner鈥攁nd they have an extra layer of ruggedness to them,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t is a more mature style.鈥
