Since I started as聽国产吃瓜黑料鈥檚 Gear Guy three years ago, I鈥檝e tested dozens of ski socks. There are lots of great options on the market鈥攆rom SmartWool鈥檚 PhD line to Darn Tough鈥檚 nearly indestructible over-the-calf models鈥攂ut season after season, I find myself turning to just one pair:聽. I鈥檝e found these merino socks to be comfortable for everything from聽big backcountry聽tours聽to resort hot laps, and I honestly聽believe they are the best snowsport聽socks you can buy. You, dear reader, might scoff, assuming there isn鈥檛聽much聽difference between one $20 sock and another. (Hey, performance isn鈥檛 cheap.)聽But I鈥檝e聽found聽there is a surprisingly big gap, for the聽reasons outlined below.聽

Fit

As its聽names suggests, Fits pays a lot of attention to how its聽ski socks hug聽your feet.聽Each ski sock has up to聽18聽different patterns and聽technologies to ensure your foot, ankle, and calf are comfortable,聽locked in, and chafe-free. (As a comparison,聽cheap tube socks take about one minute to knit, while聽Fits ski socks take more than six.)聽Here鈥檚 a more specific breakdown of the design.

Toe

The toe piece is designed like a trapezoid, which is important because the narrow聽part of the trapezoid wraps around your toes without any seams, which often聽cause blisters.聽I鈥檝e used these socks on dozens of tours and in-bounds days聽and the toe has never bunched, nor have I ever gotten a blister, even when聽my toes were rubbing my boot while skinning.

Heel

All Fits ski socks have a particularly聽deep heel cup that locks in聽your foot.聽The company聽creates this secure cup by combining just the right amount of Lycra, nylon, and wool to create a construction that compresses聽yet moves with聽your foot as you ski and hike.聽In other socks,聽I鈥檝e found the heel cup to be too tight, but Fits nailed the design so your heel stays in place but never feels constricted.

Arch

The arch in all Fits ski socks is constructed to conforms to the curvature of your foot聽while simultaneously pulling in the toe and heel so the socks don鈥檛 bunch up and cause blisters. This elasticity also makes the socks easy聽to pull聽on. While you have to yank聽some ski socks to get them over your feet, the Fits slide right on.

Leg

The leg on the Ultra Light Ski OTC鈥攁nd all of the company鈥檚 ski socks鈥攈as graduated compression. That means the sock is聽tightest at the ankle and gets looser as it moves up your calf. The socks always stay up but don鈥檛聽leave your legs feeling choked for blood. I take off聽other ski socks as soon I鈥檓 done skiing because they feel like vises on my legs. With Fits, I鈥檓 happy to wear the聽socks to dinner.

Materials

For all of its ski socks, Fits uses high-end 18.5-micron merino wool,聽because it wicks sweat, fights odor, and creates a lot of warmth. Other companies,聽such as SmartWool and Darn Tough, also use merino, of course, but Fits says its wool/synthetic聽blend is unique聽and part of what makes them fit so well.聽

罢丑颈肠办苍别蝉蝉听

Ski boots need to fit tightly and securely around your foot to allow聽direct power transfer from your boot to the ski. To ensure its聽socks aren鈥檛 interfering, Fits knits the Ultra Light Ski OTC only two millimeters thick. Other brands offer similarly thin socks, but I always return to Fits because I think the聽fit is superior.
