Swiss alpinist Ueli Steck finished his 82 Summits project鈥攁scending all 82 of the 4,000-meter peaks in the Alps, in 61 days鈥. Steck, who holds the speed record for climbing the north side of the Matterhorn, relied entirely on human-powered transportation,聽including hiking, cycling, paragliding, and skiing,聽to complete his project.听

Early in the trip, German mountaineer Michi Wohlleben withdrew from the project聽after injuring his leg while landing a paraglider off Schreckhorn, the fourth summit in their series. On July 22, Martijn Seuren, a Dutch member of Steck鈥檚 expedition team, died after falling 950 feet into a crevasse near the border of France and Italy.
Steck finished one day short of breaking the speed record for the 82 peaks, set in 2008 by Italians Franco Nicolini and Diego Giovannini, according to Rock and Ice.听
